Students read authentic passages by Roman authors and review language constructions and vocabulary in context. There is a focus on comprehension, analysis of stylistic technique, and interpretation of the author’s intent through word choice, syntax, and allusion. Latin verse will be read aloud in meter to explore the meter’s impact on the mood of the passage. Students make connections between the passages studied and larger topics including: ancient history and geography; Roman daily life and culture; and modern words derived from Latin.
