Exploring Journalism

This exploratory course requires students to produce a newspaper or audio/video news broadcast. Through their work, students learn about newspaper and broadcast writing and production.

Students will:

  • Learn and use journalistic style.
  • Analyze print and/or television broadcasts for content and technical quality.
  • Write news articles including editorials, features, and sports and/or develop broadcast shorts including commercials, public service announcements, or news shows, public service announcements, and commercials.
  • Experience the various jobs of journalistic work such as proofreading, editing, layout of pictures and copy, headlines, writing script preparation, and final production.

Exploring Public Speaking

<p>Students will practice all elements of preparation, delivery, and evaluation in preparing and presenting speeches including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Research, organize, and outline speeches.</li>
<li>Develop techniques for impromptu and extemporaneous speeches.</li>
<li>Deliver speeches from both outlined and prepared texts.</li>
<li>Develop techniques for highly effective communication, such as humor, quotations, props, and graphic information.</li>
<li>Learn oratorial skills for effective delivery.</li>
</ul>

Journalism

Yearbook

<p>In this course students produce the school yearbook. Through their work, students learn about publication writing and production.</p>
<p>Students will:</p>

<li>Experience the various jobs of journalistic work such as proofreading, editing, layout of pictures and copy, writing headlines and captions, final production, and distribution.</li>
<li>Learn and use journalistic style.</li>
<li>Write a variety of articles suitable for publication.</li>
<li>Proofread and edit articles.</li>
